Shumen

Lying midway between Veliko Tanovo and Varna, it is a base from which tourist can explore the historical sites of the ancient Bulgarian capitals Pliska and Preslav.

Places of interest:
 the Madara Horseman, which is under the UNESCO protected;
 the Tombul Mosque;
 the Bezisten, which is an in-doors market built for the Dubrovnik merchants in the 16th century;
 the national park, Shumensko Plato;
 the medieval fortress.
