SmolyanThe town is scattered in central Rhodope mountains and is situated 1010m above sea level, being the highest town in Bulgaria. It is attractively squeezed between pine-covered peaks and is a home of both modern housing estates and beautiful old traditional Bulgarian houses.
The picturesque natural beauty of the area is unquestionable, with its seven lakes known also as the "emerald eyes of the Rhodopes" and green forests. The proximity of the town to one of the biggest Bulgarian winter resorts, Pamporovo, make it an attractive tourist destination.
There are many hotels, restaurants and a lift to Snezhanka peak, which facilitate the stay of the large number of tourists, which visit the town every year.
Places to Visit:
the Art Gallery; and
the Ethnographic Museum, which exhibits specific Rhodopes motifs in historic textiles such as sacks, belts, aprons, rugs, and the unique for the Rhodopes shepherd's bells; and
the Pangalov's House from 1860 is of great cultural interest.
