Veliko Tarnovo

The town is situated along the historical hills of Sveta Gora, Tsarevets and Trapezitsa, on the two banks of the Yantra River.

Veliko Tarnovo is the former capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (1185-1396) and a symbol of the Bulgarian nationhood and pride. The layout of the town is unforgettable due to its old Bulgarian houses, which are scattered over the town’s hills.

Places to visit:
 the medieval fortress of Tsarevets, which attracts thousands of tourists each year;
 the Royal Palace and Patriarchate;
 the Church St Petka;
 the 13th century Church of the Forty Martyrs;
 the Church of Saints Petar and Pavel, the sole better preserved church from medieval Tarnovo.
 Sveta Gora (Holy Hill) used to be a centre of monastic scholasticism with numerous churches and monasteries.
